In 1989, Norlake became the first U.S. commercial refrigeration company to introduce HCFC (hydrochlorofluorocarbons)-blown polyurethane insulation (Ozone Guard-22), reducing ozone-depleting CFC (chlorofluorocarbons) in refrigeration products. At the time, CFCs were the industry standard for blowing insulation foams in walk-in panels, but they were later identified as a major contributor to ozone layer depletion. By 1997, Norlake was using CFC-free foam in all polyurethane insulation.

Norlake has embedded this history of pioneering innovation to stay ahead of evolving regulations into their core values. With the AIM Act, enacted in 2020 with the goal of phasing down HFCs in a staged approach leading through 2036, manufacturers must adapt their solutions to new requirements. Norlake fully adopted R-290 with a new, patented solution years ahead of the first phase deadline.

Norlake remained a family-owned business until 2003, when they were acquired by Standex Foodservice Equipment Group. They joined the RSG portfolio in 2020 when Ten Oaks Group acquired them.

Norlake is the trusted partner for independent restaurants, chains, and schools, featuring a lineup of walk-in coolers and freezers from quick ship to fully custom, and best-in-class refrigeration systems.

It features highly customized solutions ideal for laboratory refrigeration and industrial applications where precision performance is non-negotiable. These include specifically designed environmental rooms, refrigeration systems, and electronic control systems that work in tandem to provide seamless operation.

The two main product lines under the Norlake Scientific brand include Enviro-line and Mini Room. Enviro-line products are fully customized rooms and stability chambers designed to replicate and closely monitor any environment through a precise combination of humidity, temperature, and light. These rooms allow operators to create the exact settings required using various sizes, shapes, refrigeration, and control options.

Mini Rooms are controlled-temperature rooms designed for a stable environment that are easy to install. They are less custom than Enviro-line, but serve the purpose for many applications, including blood banks and agricultural growth rooms.

Common Norlake Scientific applications include blood plasma freezers, environmental test chambers, vaccine storage freezers, and environmentally controlled rooms for academic research.

In 1961, then-President Elmer Saul decided to move the company to New Albany, MS, as part of the “Balance Agriculture with Industry Program.” This program, established by Mississippi governor Hugh L. White, was an effort to reduce the state’s reliance on agriculture by promoting industrial growth with state-sponsored subsidies.

The 1980s witnessed extensive sales growth, leading to three expansions of manufacturing space. These expansions brought Master-Bilt’s manufacturing footprint to 300,000 sq. ft.

From humble beginnings to massive expansion. Master-Bilt was founded by two friends in a three-car garage in St. Louis, MO in 1938. The first product they produced was refrigerated coolers for 10-gallon milk cans used on dairy farms. As the business started to take off, they expanded to a 55,000 sq/ ft. factory in 1946.
